Some home owners prefer the look of their lawns after a fresh cut when all of the clippings are bagged and thrown away rather than being spread around the lawn by the mower. Well contrary to popular belief, those old lawn clippings happen to be made of 80% water and hold 25% of all the nutrients that the grass you need to thrive throughout the year. Grass clippings also serve as a great moisture shield which keeps your grass more moist and growing greener and conserves water. Being that the clippings are 80% water, they decompose rather rapidly and do not contribute to thatch. Clippings also release very little odor. The odor the clippings do release is not a bad one. Actually, many people enjoy the smell of a fresh cut lawn and as those clippings decompose, they release a valuable component of fertilizer called nitrogen into the lawn. Another Tampa lawn care tip to consider is that if you are treating your lawn with a herbicide of some form, the lawn clippings would obviously contain some of it. Rather than throw away the herbicide you sprayed, you can actually make sure it better penetrates the lawn by letting the treated clippings decompose where they where supposed to! Obviously you have to be wary not to over do it if you’re bagging the grass and then redistributing it across your lawn when finished mowing. Big clumps of grass will block essential sunlight from getting to the living grass underneath it and cause your lawn more harm than good.
